Red chalk is particularly well suited to sketches, nude studies and rural landscapes, offering an excellent ability to suggest volume and texture. The use of sanguine can be traced back to the Renaissance, both for enhancing colours and for creating drawings. It became particularly widespread in Florence and Lombardy, where Leonardo da Vinci and his circle used it constantly. Its use reached its peak in the 18th century, when new techniques expanded the possibilities for shades and chromatic variations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For your enjoyment \u2013 and mine \u2013 I create red-ink drawings on <\/strong>paper in various sizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the smaller prints come with a mat, whilst others are sold without one; it\u2019s up to you to find a frame that will show them off to their best advantage in your home<\/p>\n\n\n\n
